Wednesday Therapy

So with the holiday this week my days are WAY off ~ Today we did compression therapy & a feeding session. Blake tried a snack stick cracker & tried a fruit strip again 3 for 3 :) Yahoo ! We are headed camping soon and I am looking forward to a new kind of therapy bin ... the great outdoors :)

Goop & Slime

What a rough weekend ~ B had some GI issues & to top it off a battle with a local pharmacist made it a long /no meds weekend -

On Sunday B and Daddy made Slime or Goop with Borax- B was very hesitant to try this since it was wet - and messy . After hours of watching big sis LOVE playing in the goop- he gave it a try with tools in hand - a spatula and a fork- after a while he dug in and while his hands did get sticky and messy..he did it - not for long and quickly wiped them off... but he did it~!

Due to his tummy issues we really didn't push feeding therapy this weekend to give him time to just recover.

Today we did not practice our normal therapy. Today we had tummy issues- About every 3-4 days Blake will complain of a stomach ache- one that usually goes away once he goes to the bathroom- Today was not a normal tummy ache- He continues to do all his normal activities even though he has slight tummy issues.

Ready, Set, Taste { or Not}

Today we started with our sensory bin & Turtle power :) I added 12 hidden turtles into our bin, all with different textures on the shells. After finding all 12 and counting them and hiding them again- making sure to get our good sensory time in, we headed to the feeding portion of therapy.

Today B started with cheerios. He has always loved them. Next I chose Goldfish Puffs, these are a puffed version of regular goldfish. He made it 3 steps before placing it in the all done bowl. Now, I want to stress he was excited to try these, the package looked safe to him, the name goldfish is safe. The smell of these was to much and in the bowl they went. Next was a gerber strawberry bite - its similar to a triscut with strawberry filling. He made it to the licking step, he also played with it and broke it apart to see the inside. Welshes has new freeze dried fruit pouches, we tried the strawberry & banana pack- He touched the banana but didn't make it to the Kiss/Lick step.
After taking a quick one minute break we returned to the table and started with a Simply Balanced Fruit Strip {this is similar to a fruit leather} Although very hesitant he took a mouse size bite and swallowed :) Next up was a banana muffin, this item did not make to the mouth but he did touch and smell it! I am so proud of him for working with me and really TRYING, He wants to eat normal ~ Texture, Sensory & Anxiety prevent him from it! We will get through this !

Feeding Steps :

Step 1 - Smell
Step 2 - Touch
Step 3 - Kiss
Step 4 - Lick
Step 5 - Put in Mouth
Step 6 - Bite
Step 7 - Chew
Step 8 - Swallow

Today we began our Full Feeding Therapy -
{last week we have only completed sensory therapy}
I was able to prep our Sensory Bin  & Our food for the session before B came home from school. Since Kindergarten can be such tough work, I give him 10 minutes to just "unwind" after school. Then its time to play with our Sensory Bin- This weeks bin has Rice, Frogs, Spiders, Bats & Red squishy objects. B has his Magnifying glass and gets to exploring ! Our Sensory Bin play last from 5-10 min. & is easily transitioned into Feeding Therapy. Our place-mat was provided from Vanderbilt Feeding Program. With Sections 1-10 we place our Favorite foods  GOLD FISH on the number spots ~ Who doesn't love starting therapy with a good go to item? B quickly gobbled those up! Next up was my pick ... Similar texture and color { But different shape and taste } Apple Jacks - He skipped right over step 1-4 and went to straight to 5-8 :) We had success ~ and once we told him they were Apple Jacks he said, Oh man, I thought they were fruit loops ! Next up ...B's choice- Cheerios : Straight to step 8 ! Next Up - My Choice - Onion Straws { smell is powerful } He touched it long enough to place it in the All Done Bowl. Next up - B's Choice- More Goldfish! My Next Choice was a apple slice ~ Step 1-4 he completed- He struggled with 5-8 but was able to get the tiniest piece swallowed :)Success ! Our last item of the day was a Watermelon Ball-  He was very nervous about this item. He smelled it, touched it, and kissed it but then quickly placed it in the all done bowl. As we go on I hope to add more fruits, veggies and proteins to his diet as well as more variety in the foods he enjoys today!

Amazon has a great price on the book I use to help with B's Therapy - Food Chaining ~ This is a affiliate link & I will receive a very small amount when you purchase, which helps me continue to post our sensory bins, and feeding outlines.Food Chaining

A little about our Little MAN ~ He has struggled with eating since birth. He suffered from reflex, and later Gerd. When we began to add solid foods to his diet he would gag, and choke. After he began to eat with his teeth we started introducing table and stage 3 foods. More choking and screaming and our battles really began. { at one point he was allergic to milk, eggs and soy} He has since outgrown his allergies and at 6 years old with a eating disorder & GI Issues { Gastroparsis} We have started home therapy & a version of Food Chaining. I will post our progress~ Success & Hiccups along the way.
